Among the traditional descriptions of any synagogue is Beit Midrash – or house of “searching out” – i.e. “learning.” Intellectual growth is an important part of life. But, intellectual growth is a means to an end.
Learning how to live successfully, that is, responsibly and joyfully as Jews who love Yeshua the Messiah, requires exposing our hearts and minds to the sacred texts. It means acquainting ourselves with the “big story” of Israel in relation to the other people groups of the world and in relation to Messiah Yeshua. It means dialogue. It means discussion. It means becoming comfortable with the “complexity of apparent opposites” – and not accepting superficial answers to tough questions.
